Background
Handball was introduced in Rwanda by the German Brothers of charities and white Father. The first official Handball match known was played at G.S de la SALLE/ Byumba in 1983 between the two teams Groupe Scolaire de Zaza and Groupe Scolaire De La Salle Byumba. With the support of these German Brothers and white Fathers, handball spread gradually in other parts of the country especially in secondary schools. Despite the presence of many teams were in 1985, the Rwandan Handball Federation (FERWAHAND) was established and the first president was voted in 1988 and then in 1992 the Federation was officially recognized by the Rwanda National Olympic Committee (CNOR), the Ministry of Justice in the time that had in its attributions Federations and Sports in general, the African Handball Confederation (CAHB), the International Handball Federation (IHF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
ON THE RWANDA HANDBALL FEDERATION
- The Rwanda Handball Federation ‘’FERWAHAND’’ in short, is a non-profit making association whose mission is to contribute to self-fulfillment, social cohesion, improving the social welfare of Rwandans through the practice, diffusion and the promotion of high level Handball. In this way two aspects of Handball are taken into account namely indoor Handball and Beach Handball to achieve this goal.

FERWAHAND TODAY
- The Rwanda Handball Federation office is at Rwanda Amahoro Stadium office no 1109.Ferwahand has legal certificate No 156/RGB/LP/10/2017, this prove that our federation is one of the strongest and organized federations in the country.
- Our mission is to contribute to self-fulfillment, social cohesion, improving the social welfare of Rwandans through the practice, diffusion of collective handball and the promotion of high level handball.
- Our goal is to develop the handball in Rwanda from grassroots to the elite handball.
- Rwanda handball teams recorded the best results at the level of the zone and also at continental level. In August 2018, Rwanda U20 national team men took the 4th place in Africa IHF Trophy, after winning the cup of IHF Trophy zone V at Kampala Uganda.
- At the level of clubs Police Handball team won East and Centre Africa Clubs Championship Games Kigali 2019 at Dar Salaam 2021 and College ADEGI Gituza won the East African interschool’s competitions (FEASSA) that took Place in Tanzania (Arusha) in September 2019 and Arusha, Tanzania 2019, while ES Kigoma and College de Gisenyi (Inyemeramihigo) took the second and third place respectively.
- In practice, handball is among first and most practiced sports in Rwanda. With 10 team in championship men category in First Division, 10 Teams in Second Division and 12 teams in women category. U17 Championship count 28 boys and 26 girls’ teams from handball school’s centers from all provinces.
- Encouraged by these observations and eager to consolidate these realizations, the federation has decided, under the impulse and support of the Ministry of Sports, to pursue this way and enable Handball to impose itself as the window of the country. It is in this regard that the Federation decided to elaborate a sustainable, structuring and coherent strategic plan of Handball and request your company to be the official partner from 2019.
